GRAMMAR OVERVIEW
Grammar is a vital aspect of our daily speech, word usage and sentence structure. Here at SJGS, we recognize the need to devote a class to learning grammatical structure separate from the other language art classes. Learning parts of speech with their uses, diagramming sentences, and organizing sentence structure are key elements to becoming a very proficient writer for future levels. Areas of concentration are as follows:
? Parts of speech
? Sentence structure
? Sentence diagramming
? Transitional words
? Descriptive writing
? Forming an outline
* There will be quizzes given periodically and at least 2 tests given each semester. Some quizzes and tests may be given through verbal response.
VOCABULARY OVERVIEW
We have a unique approach to teaching vocabulary and spelling at SJGS. These topics are taught in tandem to provide a learning intensive and exciting environment. This dynamic class uses the Free Rice program as well as workbooks to teach. Spelling bee style reviews add excitement to test preparation as well as giving a good basis for our yearly Spelling Bee. We also incorporate Greek & Latin roots in our vocabulary studies to give our children preparation for college SATS. Students in this interactive class leave with better spelling skills, a fuller understanding of the governing principles of spelling, as well as having a strong comprehension of the meaning of words.
