ART OVERVIEW

SJGS recognizes the importance of art education as an essential component to a well rounded education.  It's been proven that early exposure to visual art promotes beneficial neurodevelopmental activity.  Art increases connections and understanding of the academics-- math, science, language arts and history/geography.  Participating in art activities helps children to gain the tools necessary for understanding human experience, and respecting the cultures and ways of working and thinking, developing creative problem solving skills, and communicating thoughts and ideas in a variety of ways.

JOURNALISM: "The River Otter Gazette"

Cobb Hall students create the school newspaper: "The River Otter Gazette". From coming up with article ideas, to researching and then writing the news, to editing what they write, our students have a hand in every aspect of their newspaper. Our students learn the ins and outs of news article writing as well as becoming aware of the world around them. With our kids being the future of tomorrow, these are skills that will benefit them for life. The Gazette is a high quality, student produced product they and you can be proud of.

  • Basic reporting skills
  • How to write a news article
  • Editing articles
  • What goes into a good article and newspaper
  • Clip art, fonts, and other items used to bring creativity to the paper
  • Advertisements and the importance to the newspaper

LIFE SKILLS

Life skills is exactly what it sounds like - skills for life!  At Cobb Hall, we feel it is important to give the students an opportunity to expand their horizons with a class designed to compliment their academic skills.  Many times, students at this age begin to experience situations in life that may seem “life altering”.  Our life-skills class is to provide a safe forum for the students to bring life’s challenging questions.  At Cobb Hall, we feel a responsibility to arm our students with the skills they need to attack life head on!  Some areas to be addressed in this class are:

  • Study skills
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Character development
  • Communication
  • Money Management

P.E. OVERVIEW

Physical activity in our daily routines is crucial to a healthy lifestyle.  Here at SJGS, we also know that physical exercise plays an important role in the neurodevelopment of children of all ages.  The motor skills used on the athletic field also contribute to better brain functioning in the classroom and in social situations.  Physical activity is built into each school day beginning with 30 minutes of track walking in the morning, including obstacle course activities at recess and ample time for free play/gross motor play activities on our 1-acre "green" playground.

  • Stretching
  • Balance
  • Coordination

SCIENCE OVERVIEW

Science is a subject that we experience daily. It happens all around us whether we notice it or not. We here at SJGS believe that understanding the fundamentals of this vast subject can facilitate a passion for a lifetime of learning. Students will experience daily hands-on experiments and projects that will give them a deeper understanding about the things that shape our world. We use open discussions and welcome free thinking opinions to thoroughly comprehend the subjects. The students will walk away with a greater understanding about how things work and why. There will be 2 tests throughout the year, weekly homework and writing assignments, as well as take home projects.

  SPANISH OVERVIEW

The Spanish program in Cobb Hall is designed to foster students' ability to speak and write spanish.  The program explores the language by combining vocabulary, language syntax and cultural elements.  Students practice and strengthen their oral and aural skills through group exercises and conversation with partners.  spiral learning and repetition are important elements when learning a language.  Knowing this importance, the curriculum recycles and introduces new and learned material at the same time.
