JOURNALISM: The River Otter Gazette
Cobb Hall students create the school newspaper: The River Otter Gazette. From coming up with article ideas, to researching and then writing the news, to editing what they write, our students have a hand in every aspect of their newspaper. Our students learn the ins and outs of news article writing as well as becoming aware of the world around them. With our kids being the future of tomorrow, these are skills that will benefit them for life. The Gazette is a high quality, student produced product they and you can be proud of.

LIFE SKILLS
Life skills is exactly what it sounds like - skills for life! At Cobb Hall, we feel it is important to give the students an opportunity to expand their horizons with a class designed to compliment their academic skills. Many times, students at this age begin to experience situations in life that may seem “life altering”. Our life-skills class is to provide a safe forum for the students to bring life’s challenging questions. At Cobb Hall, we feel a responsibility to arm our students with the skills they need to attack life head on! Some areas to be addressed in this class are:
? Study skills
? Conflict resolution
? Character development
? Communication
? Money Management

SCIENCE OVERVIEW
Science is a subject that we experience daily. It happens all around us whether we notice it or not. We here at SJGS believe that understanding the fundamentals of this vast subject can facilitate a passion for a lifetime of learning. Students will experience daily hands-on experiments and projects that will give them a deeper understanding about the things that shape our world. We use open discussions and welcome free thinking opinions to thoroughly comprehend the subjects. The students will walk away with a greater understanding about how things work and why. There will be 2 tests throughout the year, weekly homework and writing assignments, as well as take home projects. · Cells: Discussions and activities about cells and cellular function. · Genetics: activities involving genetic related features and probability of outcomes · Body Systems: overview of human body systems and their functions · Classification: basics of classification in the animal kingdom · Vertebrates vs. invertebrates: understanding the difference · Microorganisms: investigating the unseen parts of the world · Nutrition: discussions and projects related to eating right for life · Scientific Method: Why we use it and love it · Ecosystems: Differences and connections between ecosystems · Carbon cycle: exploring the carbon cycle on earth · Food Webs: investigations into the parts of a food web and how they connect life systems · Habitats: What living things need to survive · Living or Non-living: differentiating between living and non living things. · Dissection of Owl Pellets and · Egg Science: Exploring the inside of an egg · Life Cycles: discussions on the cycles of life · Fossils and Dinosaurs: How they were and how they got here · Plants: The ins and outs of plant life

SPANISH OVERVIEW
Spanish at Cobb Hall is a fun and educational language class. We feel that children learn a language best by speaking it using real life experiences and conversations. Some areas to be covered are greetings, restaurant ordering and menu items, daily activities and basic conversational skills. Students of our language program learn the importance of knowing at least the basics of a second language, which will also benefit them when they are ready to go out into the world on their own.
Computers have become such an important part of everyday life. Knowing this, at SJGS we want to give our students the knowledge and skills they need in order to properly use a computer. This includes not only typing but how to use various computer programs as well as how to care for their computers. We also know that with the use of the internet, our students need to learn caution and safety while using this tool. The Cobb Hall technology program gives its students all the tools they need to begin using their computers efficiently and safely!
Areas of Concentration
· Typing
· Microsoft Word
· Microsoft Excel
· Microsoft PowerPoint
· Basic computer use and care
· Internet usage and safety
*Testing in Cobb Hall will not always be paper and pencil. Some will consist of verbal response and open discussion. Projects will also be used periodically as a test grade. Information for all projects will be sent home at least one week prior to the due date. There will be at least 2 test grades given each quarter
X-TREME TEAM CLUB
X-Treme Team Club is the Cobb Hall social club that allows the students to hang out and “connect” with each other outside of class. Not only can they get to know each other better, they can bring other friends which widens their social circle. Our nights include games, food and fun! We hope that everyone will want to come out to participate in our Friday night fun and enhance their time here at Cobb Hall!
